Acknowledgements
Many lawyers, journalists, judges and Massachusetts Bar Association staff members lent time and expertise to the production of this edition of the Massachusetts Journalists' Court and Legal Handbook.
Former MBA Criminal Justice Section chairman Thomas M. Hoopes of Hoopes & Cronin offered extensive assistance with updating the Criminal Cases chapter. Superior Court Judge Daniel F. Toomey of the reviewed and offered comments on the search warrants and subpoena section. Former Civil Litigation Section chairman Warren F. Fitzgerald of Meehan, Boyle & Cohen once again lent his expertise to the review of the Civil Cases section.
Attorney Jonathan M. Albano of Bingham, Dana & Gould offered valuable comments that were incorporated into the chapters on freedom of information and journalist's privilege.
Karen D. O'Toole, assistant board counsel to the Board of Bar Overseers offered her expertise with updating the section on lawyer discipline.
Susan B. Inniss, the Massachusetts Bar Association production coordinator, spent many hours updating the design and laying-out this edition of the Journalists' Handbook as well as updating the section on resources.
This edition of the Journalists' Handbook is based on the 1991 edition which represented the first revision and publication of a Massachusetts Bar Association journalists' guide since 1980. The assistance of several individuals with the 1991 revision must be acknowledged: the editor thanks Boston Globe chief editorial writer Robert L. Turner, former MBA president Michael S. Greco, MBA general counsel Benjamin Fierro III, MBA publications director Lori Dougherty, former television journalist Ann Dufresne of Regan Associates, Northeastern University associate journalism professor William Kirtz, Lynn attorney and former reporter Richard Vitali.
Finally, the editor offers a very special acknowledgement to the late James Ragsdale, former editor of the New Bedford Standard-Times. A long-time active supporter of bench-bar-press understanding and cooperation, Jim was instrumental in soliciting writers, gathering material and otherwise expediting production of the Massachusetts Bar Association Journalists' Court and Legal Handbook. He is missed.
