Same-Sex Marriage - New Protections and New Planning Challenges

This past year has brought significant changes by way of the recent widespread legalization of same-sex marriage in New England. Yet, the laws are not equally applied to them as they are to same-sex married couples and their families. Even with the recent extension of spousal rights to gay and lesbian couples under various state laws, such rights can be at risk when the couples cross state lines. Further, no spousal related tax benefits are available at the federal level to same-sex married couples.

This seminar will review the true protections available to those in same-sex relationships within New England and across the country, and will provide practice tips on the tax implications of marriage, divorce, life planning, death planning and property ownership.
