Dear Young Lawyers:
Summer vacation seems so long ago. During this fall season, our days have become filled with endless files, phone calls, court dates, closings, demanding partners and clients. It may seem you have little opportunity to complete your work responsibilities, so why would you waste time with a bar association? You may ask yourself, what could you contribute to a bar association? You have been out of law school for only a few years. You are not yet an expert in any field of law.
During my experience with the MBA, I have found that we have much to contribute. As a new lawyer, we need your help to shape the future of our legal profession within the commonwealth. Now is the perfect time to join the MBA’s Young Lawyers Division (YLD). This group was known as the Young Lawyers Section of the MBA until 2005, but in 2006, the section transformed itself into a division with its own by-laws, budget and a more unified voice within the MBA.
In addition, since this change, the YLD has attracted over 30 new lawyers who actively participate in our monthly Board of Directors’ meetings. The YLD has its own officers and regional delegates who represent each county within the commonwealth. We publish this newsletter. We discuss legislative issues affecting our profession from a new lawyer’s perspective. We promote public service activities for new lawyers within the MBA, such as Dial-A-Lawyer and Mock Trial for high school students. YLD also develops and presents educational programs relevant to new lawyers. We organize social events for our membership such as happy hours, receptions at MBA events, and a Night at the Celtics.
There is no better time to join our growing division, to meet other new lawyers and to shape our profession. Please contact us, or come to our November meeting. The next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the law firm of Mirick O’Connell, 11 Front St., Worcester. The date is TBA, but we will update you.
For more information, please contact Marc Moccia, division coordinator at (617) 338-0671 or via e-mail. You can also contact me, David J. Murphy, at (617) 423-1150 or via e-mail.
