Counterterrorism expert Richard Clarke slated to speak at MBA's Gala Dinner in November

Richard A. Clarke, former White House advisor, counterterrorism expert and bestselling author of “Against All Enemies,” will serve as the keynote speaker at the Gala Dinner presented by the Massachusetts Bar Association on Nov. 1. The association’s hallmark event will take place at the recently opened InterContinental Hotel located on Boston’s waterfront.

Over the course of an unprecedented 11 consecutive years of White House service, Clarke worked for seven presidents and devoted three decades to combating the terrorist threat to America. Clarke is the author of the New York Times best-seller “Against all Enemies: Inside America’s War on Terror,” as well as the newly released novel entitled “Breakpoint.”

He currently serves as chairman of Good Harbor Consulting LLC, advising clients on a range of issues including corporate-security risk management, information-security technology, dealing with the federal government on security and IT issues, and counterterrorism. Clarke is also an on-air consultant with ABC News and director of the Hart-Rudman Task Force on emergency responders.

The Nov. 1 Gala Dinner will carry the momentum of the successful March 2 Annual Dinner, which featured a keynote address from National Public Radio’s Nina Totenberg. The MBA typically hosts its Annual Dinner in the spring to coincide with the MBA Annual Conference; however, this year the association will bring a new model to the presentation of its signature events.

Beginning in the fall, four MBA signature events will be presented separately throughout the 2007-08 association year. The Nov. 1 Gala Dinner will follow the Oct. 11 Bench-Bar Symposium, which will take place at the John Adams Courthouse. Two events will then be held in the spring—the MBA’s Access to Justice Luncheon at the JFK Library and Museum on March 6 and the Continuing Legal Education Conference, a one-day event with CLE offerings and plenary sessions, to be held at the Sheraton Boston Hotel on April 28.

For more information on the Nov. 1 Gala Dinner or any of the four MBA signature events, call the MBA's Member Services Center at (617) 338-0530.

MBA launches Bench-Bar Breakfast Forum in Springfield

Highlights included a frank discussion on time standards in each of the courts

More than 30 judges and attorneys who practice in four different Hampden County courts joined MBA President Mark D Mason on May 30 for the first MBA Bench-Bar Breakfast Forum, presented in cooperation with the Hampden County Bar Association.

Much of the discussion focused on the Superior Court's Firm and Fair Trial Initiative and time standards in all of the county's courts. Judges said that time standards are often a reminder of the lack of adequate advanced technology in the courts, and noted, for example, the current lack of an electronic means for the Probate and Family Court to monitor the number of open cases.

Other topics of discussion included the role of pre-trial  conferences, availability of adequate judicial resources and the benefits of bench-bar collaboration. The next MBA Bench-Bar Breakfast Forum will take place in Bristol County.
