NOTE: This association year, the MBA is increasing its CLE offerings to at least 80, with more seminars and offerings throughout the state. At least 10 seminars running from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. will take place each month. In addition to more programming in the Greater Boston area, the MBA will increase its CLE offerings in the communities of Springfield, Marlborough, Andover, Taunton and Worcester.

CHILD SUPPORT GUIDELINES
Hot Off the Press: The New Child Support Guidelines
In response to the highly-anticipated release of the amendments to the Child Support Guidelines, the Massachusetts Bar Association has scheduled the following seminars. Massachusetts Trial Court’s Child Support Guidelines Task Force members will discuss the newly released Child Support Guidelines that mandate the first support calculation in divorce, paternity, separate support and guardianship cases involving unemancipated children, and often form the basis for overall support orders and allocation of certain expenses.

Business Basics for Divorce Lawyers: Reading and Using Tax Returns in Divorce Cases

Every divorce lawyer needs to be able to review, analyze and understand the basics of income tax returns and must also be able to determine when he or she needs to call in an expert to glean further information. The course will include a basic review of divorce tax principles including: a comparison of alimony and child support tax treatment; consequences of mischaracterization of support; tax treatment for personal loans; capital gains and losses; transfers of a residence; earned income credit; head of household filing status; and dependency exemption. This seminar will also briefly cover the some of the basics of business valuations. The MBA plans a further, follow-up seminar to explore business valuations in depth (date to be announced).
