Image for Strategic Plan

MBA invites member feedback about mission statement

Strategic Planning Committee seeks input

The MBA has assembled a Strategic Planning Committee, chaired by MBA Secretary Douglas K. Sheff, to prepare a long-range plan for the association. One of the group's first objectives is to refine the MBA's mission statement:
The Massachusetts Bar Association is the pre-eminent association representing the interests of lawyers throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The Massachusetts Bar Association is a volunteer organization of lawyers representing the legal profession, serving lawyers, the justice system, and the public.  It provides professional support and education to members, and advocacy on behalf of lawyers, legal institutions, and the public.

The core values of the Massachusetts Bar Association are professionalism, equal access to the legal system for all, and an unswerving commitment to the profession, to the rule of law, to each other, and to the people whom we serve.

  1. Enhance professionalism among lawyers, and support members in their professional development.
  2. Foster a positive reputation for lawyers through professionalism, public education and service.
  3. Advocate in the legislature and other forums, and develop and support programs, with respect to issues affecting the legal profession, the rule of law, and access to justice for all, including indigent persons.
  4. Increase and develop the membership, recognizing the importance of diversity and inclusion.
  5. Provide members opportunities for networking, mentoring, and social events.
  6. Ensure that the MBA has the volunteer and management infrastructure, financial resources, personnel, technology, facilities, and other requisites to accomplish its mission.

The committee seeks feedback from MBA members, and invites you to answer the following question: From your perspective, what is the most important element that is (or should be) critical to the mission of Massachusetts Bar Association?
Members should [e-mail strategicplanning] with their answers by Monday, Sept. 22.
