News from the courts
Court closures move forward
Yesterday Chief Justice for Administration and Management Robert
A. Mulligan filed, with the legislature, a statutorily required
report on Court Relocations. Click here to read the report. This
report marks the beginning of the 90 day notice period required by
Chapter 68 of the Acts of 2011. The report outlines the work of the
Court Relocation Committee and the fiscal climate of the Trial
Court that necessitates court closings.
The Trial Court's FY12 appropriation of $519.9 million is far
below the FY09 appropriation of $605 million. The Trial Court has
taken unprecedented cost savings measures since the fiscal crisis
began. Implementing a hiring freeze in 2007, the Trial Court has
lost 1,141 staff. The trial court has also realized cost savings
from lease terminations and renegotiations.
