IRR Section honored for INS detainees report

The American Bar Association has awarded a certificate of appreciation to the MBA’s Individual Rights & Responsibilities Section in recognition of it’s “generous and valuable pro bono service” with the INS Detention Standards Implementation Initiative, a project of the Immigration Pro Bono Development and Bar Activation Project.

Last May, a delegation that included MBA representatives Michael Cutler of the Center for Public Representation and Kim Scheckner of Rogers Powers & Schwartz observed at and spoke with officials of the ACI-Cranston (R.I.) Intake Service Center to review the center’s compliance with INS Detention Standards. The delegation’s report was adopted by the House of Delegates at its June meeting and subsequently delivered to the ABA as part of a national effort to report on the conditions of confinement of INS detainees.
