It's that time again … time to renew your dues to keep enjoying and taking advantages of all the great benefits and services provided to MBA members.
I hope that you are all familiar with our most long-standing benefits, such as insurance for lawyers, MBNA credit card services and car rental discounts. And I know you value our publications, because whenever we've asked or surveyed members often tell us that our publications rank among your most significant benefits. Similarly, your response has been strong to some of our more recent benefits, such as the Casemaker Online Law Library and CTSource's LegalAdvantage computer-based phone system.
But it wouldn't be renewal time if we didn't have a few new items in store for you.
Hot off the press - or rather, launched in late June on MassBar.org - is our bigger and much better Legal Career Center, which is powered by LegalStaff.com, the nation's leading online recruiting and career information service targeted specifically for the legal profession. You can check it out now - including searching jobs, posting your resume, creating job-search alerts, advertise job openings, and much more - at www.MassBar.org/career.
A companion piece to the Legal Career Center is our new Expert / Pro Search Service, which is part of LegalStaff's shared network of more than 40 legal associations and major legal information portals. Attorneys and other businesses can go online to search for expert witnesses and professional legal consultants from around the world. And for a small fee you can join the network to have your listing reach nearly 300,000 legal professionals nationwide.
Another will be seen this fall when we co-host a Career Fair to give you time with career counselors, employment experts, resume writing coaches and more.
Speaking of your career, the MBA will hold another edition of the half-day seminar "300 Ways to Use Your Law Degree," on Oct. 21. While planning is still underway, you can expect to meet local professionals from a variety of fields, all of whom got their start with a law. degree but chose not to practice law in the traditional sense.
The last time we offered this program in spring 2003, nearly 300 members attended and feedback on the program was overwhelmingly positive. For anyone thinking of a job change or career shift, this will be a don't-miss event. And if you have ideas of people you think would be interesting panelists, please share them with me.
Back on the subject of member benefits and the value of belonging to the MBA, stay tuned for an upcoming announcement about a great new benefit regarding office supplies. The ink's not quite dry on this deal that should save you money, time and the many headaches that go along with running this most practical aspect of a law practice.
One final teaser … the MBA is poised to offer its members the services of a law practice management adviser. This individual will be someone experienced in finding solutions to the many challenges that you all face today in conducting the business side of your practice. He or she will be available to assist you in addressing those issues so that you can focus more on practicing law. We expect to launch this program this fall. More information will follow about this program as well.
