Opposing the death penalty

Massachusetts Bar Association President Kathleen M. O’Donnell recently testified against Gov. Mitt Romney’s proposed legislation that would reinstate the death penalty for the most “heinous” crimes (see Lawyers Journal, July 2005). The MBA opposes the death penalty because of the catastrophic effect its implementation would have on the court system. Implementation of the death penalty would redirect funds away from already strained resources, such as court budget accounts, district attorneys’ offices and the Committee for Public Counsel Services. The hearing before the Joint Committee on the Judiciary was held at the Statehouse on July 14.
