Member benefits are highlighted in each week's issue of Lawyers e-Journal. Below are some recently featured benefits.
Lawyer Referral Service Program
The MBA’s Lawyer Referral Service is one of the largest referral services of its kind, making more than 25,000 referrals each year to its 1,000 attorney members throughout the state. That makes joining the LRS a sound choice for MBA members. Your membership with LRS not only helps the public, it also offers you the opportunity to expand your client base. We invite you to invest in this public service and your professional future by joining. If you join after Feb. 1, your membership will continue to March 31, 2009, but your expanded client base will last for years.
As an MBA member, you can participate in this program by completing a separate application form which can be sent to you upon request. Additionally, in order to join the LRS program you must be in good standing with the Board of Bar Overseers and provide proof of insurance, by forwarding a Certificate of Insurance from your current professional liability insurance carrier. The cost of joining LRS is either $75 or $100, depending on how long you have been admitted to practice.
Over the past few years, the LRS program has expanded its statewide marketing to include:
• Development of radio campaigns;
• Newly designed advertising in the Boston Yellow Book;
• Hispanic Yellow Pages, Exhibit A; and
• MBTA trains and platforms ads.
LRS will continue to advertise in most Verizon Yellow Page books, allowing you to receive referrals within your own community.
To learn more about the LRS program, call (617) 338-0556. You can also access the LRS 2008-09 application via the MBA Web site. Select “For Attorneys,” then “Resources & Services” and “Lawyer Referral Service.”

Casemaker 1.0 recently upgraded to version 2.0. The upgrade brings enhanced functionality and a more streamlined process for conducting legal research.
Unlimited Casemaker use remains free to MBA members as part of your association membership and is easily accessible through massbar.org. It is important to note that your Casemaker member benefit allows unlimited document browsing, whereas, other publishers, including Westlaw, are beginning to charge per document viewed for their browse features.
Casemaker 2.0 enhancements include:
• “Nationwide Collections” searches which allow users to search multiple state libraries simultaneously;
• Immediate access to the Massachusetts library upon log-in;
• The ability to begin a search by hitting the ENTER key, rather than by clicking on the bull’s-eye icon;
• The availability of case law and statutes for all 50 states;
• Circuit court case law going back to 1950 in the new and improved federal library; and
• Supreme Court decisions going back to the court’s inception.
In addition, users soon will be able to search case law and statutes for all of the New England states at once with a single click of the mouse.
