Symposium on Telehealth Law
Join the Massachusetts Bar Association’s Health Law Section on Friday, Sept.
30, for its annual conference. This virtual event will focus on telehealth law.
The Health Resources Services Administration defines telehealth as the use of
electronic information and telecommunications technologies to support
long-distance clinical health care, patient and professional health-related
education, and public and health administration.
The symposium committee is very proud to feature Vita Palazzolo Berg, general
counsel of the Board of Registration in Medicine (BORIM). Berg previously
served within the Department of Public Health (DPH), Bureau of Health
Professions Licensure (BHPL) for 17 years, first as a Prosecutor for the DPH
Boards of Registration, next as Board Counsel to the Board of Registration in
Nursing and then as BHPL Chief Board Counsel. The Committee is also proud to
feature Undersecretary for Health Policy Lauren Peters; Anna Krieger, director
of public policy at the Massachusetts Developmental Disabilities Council; and a
number of private practitioners to address why telehealth is important and offer
insight into important telehealth law issues, such as:
- Telehealth and Cross-Jurisdictional Issues from a Regulatory
Oversight Perspective: The delivery of healthcare through remote
telecommunications presents unique issues from a regulatory oversight
perspective, and additional concerns when the delivery occurs across state
lines. This presentation will review statutory, regulatory and policy
provisions that define the concept of telehealth and set parameters for the
practice of medicine via telehealth. It will also review the extent of
BORIM oversight when either the patient or the physician is located outside of
Massachusetts.
- Practitioner licensing issues
- Insurance issues
- Data privacy issues
- Access issues
- Remote employees
- Standards of care
