Dial-A-Lawyer offers free legal advice each month
To use Dial-A-Lawyer, call (617) 338-0610 on the first Wednesday of the month between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.
Since March of 1991, the MBA has sponsored a monthly
Dial-A-Lawyer program that encourages members of the public to call
with their legal problems and questions. This program was created
in order to assist the people of Massachusetts that have fallen
through the cracks of the legal and criminal justice system.
NOTE: The MBA is closed
on Wednesday, July 4 for Independence Day. The July monthly
Dial-A-Lawyer program will be held on Wednesday, July
11.
The program is offered also offered twice a year for the
general public in Western Mass.
The mission of the program is to assist anyone and everyone, but
particularly those who are not eligible for free legal services or
cannot afford to hire a lawyer.

How does the program work?
On the first Wednesday of each month, attorneys volunteer at the
MBA's Boston headquarters by providing free, basic legal
information by phone to callers from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Questions
cover a wide range of legal topics. Additionally, twice a year the
program is offered specifically to the general public in Western
Massachusetts.
The phones tend to be extremely busy during that two hour time
period so please keep trying to get through. To use

What does the Dial-A-Lawyer program cost?
It's free. The program is offered as a public service by the
members of the Massachusetts Bar Association. There is no limit to
the number of calls a person can make, or how many times you call
during the year. If you have a legal question, just give us a
call.
What kind of attorneys volunteer for this service?
The Dial-A-Lawyer attorneys are members of the MBA, are in good
standing and have a wide variety of legal experience.
What type of cases are handled at this program?
The attorneys handle many types of cases. There are many
different types legal issues with which Dial-a-Lawyer attorneys can
provide assistance. For example, attorneys are able to answer
questions regarding family law, bankruptcy, real estate, labor and
consumer rights.
What additional legal service is provided?
In Western Mass, the MBA also co-sponsors the annual
Dial-A-Lawyer program with The Republican newspaper and
the Western New England College School of Law in Springfield. Every
fall and spring, attorneys provide free legal advice over the phone
during the one-day event. The phone number, date and time of these
events are published in the local newspaper several days prior to
the event.
