Vélez appointed deputy chief counsel of CPCS Private Counsel Division

The Committee for Public Counsel Services has announced the appointment of Vanessa Vélez to the position of deputy chief counsel of the Private Counsel Division, effective Jan. 21, 2019.

VélezJan31BulletinThe committee is excited for the vision and passion Vélez brings to her new role, where she continues to provide exceptional defense to the commonwealth’s indigent community. Vélez follows in the footsteps of Nancy Bennett, for whom the committee will be forever grateful for her commitment and dedication over the last 37 years.

Vélez has served as the attorney in charge of the CPCS Boston District and Municipal Office for the last six years and has been an advocate of indigent defense and underprivileged communities her entire career.

Before attending Suffolk University Law School, Vélez served as a federal housing manager for the Lynn Housing Authority, managing federally funded public housing developments. She began her legal career as a solo practitioner representing indigent clients as a member of the Essex County Bar Advocate Program, before joining the CPCS Suffolk Superior Court office in 1999. Three years later, Vélez returned to private practice, continuing her commitment to indigent defense, while broadening her experience to include immigration, juvenile, probate, and family law matters.

CPCS welcomed Vélez back in 2011, as a supervising attorney in the Boston District and Municipal Office, and then appointed her attorney in charge two years later. In addition to fostering a culture of excellence for a large staff, Vélez oversaw CPCS’s participation in the Homeless Court Project and participated as a member of the Boston Veterans Treatment Court.
