Egil (Bud) Krogh, former deputy counsel to Pres. Richard M. Nixon, will dramatically draw upon his past experiences and call on attorneys - in both public service and private practice - to uphold the strictest standards of ethics and to maintain the highest level of respect for civil liberties when he speaks at the MBA's 2003 Access to Justice Awards Luncheon on Friday, January 24, 2003, at 12:15 p.m., at the Sheraton Boston Hotel, Boston.
Krogh, who today practices energy law in Seattle, Washington, frequently offers counseling in ethics to corporations, universities, government agencies and other organizations. In recent articles and speeches he has addressed the most fundamental issues facing the legal profession today - the defense of civil liberties, integrity and ethics, and public confidence in attorneys working in private, corporate and government capacities.
Following graduation from the University of Washington School of Law in 1968, Krogh served on the White House staff with responsibilities for District of Columbia governmental affairs, narcotics-control policy, and law enforcement and transportation policy. His final position in the federal government was Under Secretary of the Department of Transportation.
Krogh resigned from federal service in May of 1973. Following a lengthy investigation of his work as Director of the White House Special Investigations Unit, which had responsibility for determining the source of leaks of classified documents, Krogh pleaded guilty in November 1973 to a federal offense and served four and a half months in prison. He was disbarred by the Washington Supreme Court in 1975 and reinstated in 1980.
Following his government career, Krogh taught Values and Conflicts in Public Management and Administrative Law at Golden Gate University in San Francisco. His law practice today focuses primarily on energy issues and mediation. Krogh is currently serving as a coordinating consultant to utilities in the Northwest and the Bonneville Power Administration, which are developing a proposal for a regional electricity transmission organization.
Krogh currently is at work on a new book, Wings of Defeat: Integrity Lessons of a Nixon White House Plumber.
