MBA Secretary and Civics Task Force Chair Grace V.B. Garcia introduces Project Citizenship Staff Attorney Stephen A. Roth at the April 8 Naturalization Disability Waiver Training. More than 30 attorneys participated in the training.

The Massachusetts Bar Association hosted a Naturalization Disability Waiver Training, led by Project Citizenship Staff Attorney Stephen A. Roth, on April 8.

Immigrants whose disabilities prevent them from speaking English or learning the required U.S. civics questions face unique challenges in obtaining U.S. citizenship. The free training prepared participants to serve as pro bono attorneys at critical stages of the naturalization process, including during applications for disability-based waivers (N-648) and citizenship interviews before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Attendees are already using their new skills and have volunteered to assist in one-hour naturalization interviews with disabled clients seeking exemption from the English and civics testing requirement.

If you missed the program and you are interested in volunteering to assist in a one-hour naturalization interview, the short training is available here via MBA On Demand.

The training was sponsored by the MBA's Civics Task Force, which is focused on promoting civic awareness and participation in Massachusetts through education, empowerment and engagement.
