Gershengorn appointed chief justice of the Juvenile Court; Veterans Legal Services to host panel discussion and training on June 27; Land Court issues memorandum on mortgage instruments

Gershengorn appointed chief justice of
the Juvenile Court

Trial Court Chief Justice Heidi E. Brieger this week announced the appointment of Judge Dana M. Gershengorn as chief justice of the Juvenile Court for a five-year term in accordance with G.L. c.211B, §5, effective June 29, 2024. She will succeed Chief Justice Amy L. Nechtem, who will retire from the bench on June 28, 2024, after 23 years.

Gershengorn was appointed to the Juvenile Court in 2009 and serves in the Plymouth County Juvenile Court Division. She sits on several committees, including the Supreme Judicial Court Advisory Committee on Massachusetts Evidence Law, and served on the Juvenile Court Education Committee. She also co-chaired the Trial Court’s Innovation Grant Committee.
   
Gershengorn began her legal career in 1994 as an assistant district attorney in Middlesex County, where she served in the Child Abuse Unit and was later an assistant attorney general in the Environmental Protection Division of the Attorney General’s Office. She served several years as a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section in Washington, D.C. Gershengorn returned to Massachusetts in 2005 to serve as an assistant U.S. attorney and was responsible for all the child exploitation matters prosecuted federally in the commonwealth. She was appointed deputy chief of the Major Crimes Unit in 2008. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan and the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
 
Gershengorn and Court Administrator Thomas G. Ambrosino will reappoint Thomas R. Capasso as deputy court administrator for the Juvenile Court.

Veterans Legal Services to host panel discussion
and training on June 27

On Thursday, June 27, Veterans Legal Services, in collaboration with the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts and the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island, will host a panel discussion and training for Federal Bar Association members, lawyers, judicial/court staff and law students.

The program will highlight veterans’ legal issues, considerations and resources. It will provide an orientation on military culture for legal practitioners, identify the most common legal issues veterans face and related considerations, and share information about resources available for veterans.

The program will take place at the U.S. District Court, 1 Courthouse Way, Boston, and via Zoom livestream, beginning with a presentation from 3-4 p.m. and continuing with questions and answers from 4-4:30. A reception will follow the program.

Land Court issues memorandum on
mortgage instruments

Last week, the Land Court chief title examiner issued a new Registered Land Memorandum regarding the execution/signature date on mortgage instruments presented for registration.
