On Thursday, June 15, the Massachusetts Bar Association and its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee hosted a Juneteenth Reception to mark the federal holiday that commemorates the effective end of slavery in the United States.
Held at the MBA's Boston office, the reception featured a historical overview of Juneteenth from Dr. Deborah A. Jackson of the Center for Law, Equity & Race at Northeastern University School of Law, along with reflections on the importance of the holiday from keynote speaker Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea J. Campbell. Other speakers included MBA President Grace V.B. Garcia and President-elect Damian J. Turco, as well as Durane West and Travis Dillard, who provided a spoken word performance.
Following the speaking portion of the program, attendees took a group walk to Boston Common for a brief ceremony at the Embrace Statute, which honors Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King.
The Juneteenth reception was co-sponsored by the Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association and the Massachusetts Black Women Attorneys.
