Why I volunteer for the Dial-A-Lawyer program: Paul J. Klehm

Thursday, April 10, 2025

DAL ICONThe following is the first entry in a new series spotlighting volunteers for the Massachusetts Bar Association's monthly Dial-A-Lawyer program. As part of the series, MBA members will share their volunteer experiences and explain their reasons for participating in the program, which has assisted members of the public since March 1991.

Why I volunteer for the Dial-A-Lawyer program

Paul KlehmThere are so many people in Massachusetts who either cannot afford an attorney or who face social, economic or other barriers that prevent them from finding legal assistance. For many years, I have volunteered to take calls for Dial-A-Lawyer for the opportunity to try to provide some guidance to people who often have nowhere else to turn. No two calls are alike. Maybe I dictate a motion for the caller to file, or suggest a letter to write or some other action to take. Sometimes, I research an issue with the caller on the phone, or I explain the various procedural steps of a court case. Perhaps I direct the caller to a legal services organization that may help, or I advise the caller to sit down with a lawyer, as the issue cannot be addressed in a brief phone call. Other times, there is nothing I can do but listen, and those callers are often grateful that at least a lawyer has heard them and has concluded that there is nothing that can be done. I find taking the calls rewarding, and an opportunity for lawyers to provide a greatly-needed resource to the people of Massachusetts. I encourage my fellow members of the Massachusetts Bar Association to participate in Dial-A-Lawyer.
